Laptop backpacks for travel and commuting

Match the sleeve to the laptop you own, then the bag to the personal-item limit. A huge travel pack is a different product from a commuter bag.

A laptop backpack fails in two ways. The sleeve is too tight for the computer you own, or the bag is so large that it is a suitcase you have to carry. Measure the laptop, including a case if you use one. Then decide whether this bag is a daily commute, a personal item, or both.

Both is possible. It just means buying to the smaller limit and accepting that a week of clothes will not fit.

Fit and wear

Wear it in the store or order from a retailer with a simple return. Straps that look fine on a product photo can dig in after a terminal walk. A sternum strap matters on a heavy pack and is clutter on a light one. Water resistance is useful. A "waterproof" claim on a zipper that faces up is marketing.
