Best carry-on luggage
Measure the airline limit first. Then compare a softside spinner, a hardside spinner, and the empty weight so clothes still fit the allowance.

A carry-on is a size limit with a handle. Airlines publish the limit in inches or centimeters, and they do not care that a brand called the bag a carry-on. Look up the airline you fly most. If you fly several, buy for the strictest one you meet often.
The second number is empty weight. A heavy shell steals the allowance from your clothes if the airline weighs cabin bags, and it is simply annoying if it does not.
Softside spinner
A front pocket and a little give when the trip grows
Check the external size, not the packed dream
Hardside spinner
A shell that survives a rough gate check
Aim for a light empty weight so the limit still holds clothes
Underseat bag
A personal item when the fare has no roller
This is a different limit. Read that page before you buy

Carry-on styles
What to check on the product page
- Exterior size against your airline, including wheels and handles
- Empty weight, listed as the bag alone
- A warranty that covers the wheels, which fail first
- A pocket you will use for a laptop or a jacket, if that is the trip
Two sizes that both say "carry-on" can differ by an inch that matters at the gate. When you are between them, choose the smaller one.
The fare side of this decision is carry-on-only flying. Packing order is packing a carry-on. If the bag is also a gift, see the travel gift guide.
