Carry-on-only flying
A carry-on-only fare is cheaper only if the bag you bring is actually included. Measure the airline limit, then pack to the smaller of the two.

Flying with only a cabin bag is a real saving when the alternative is a checked-bag fee on every leg. It is a false saving when the cheap fare does not include the roller you planned to bring and the gate agent charges you anyway.
Start with the airline you are likely to fly. Write down the personal-item size and the carry-on size. Then choose the bag. The other order is how people buy a handsome suitcase that does not fit.

Wear the bulky layer. Pack one extra shirt, not three. Leave the second pair of shoes unless the trip truly needs them. Toiletries in full bottles are how a small bag becomes illegal at security. Decant them.
