Packing a carry-on

Put shoes and dense items at the wheel end, keep liquids where you can pull them out, and stop packing when the bag still closes without a fight.

Packing a carry-on is mostly subtraction. Choose a color story so tops and bottoms mix. Wear the heaviest shoes and the bulkiest jacket. Put dense things opposite the handle so the bag rolls instead of tipping.

Then close it. If you need a knee on the lid, remove one thing and try again. A bag that is legal only when compressed will not be legal after you add a book at the airport.

What goes in the bag

Order that works

  1. Shoes in a bag at the wheel end, stuffed with socks.
  2. Rolled or folded clothes in the main compartment.
  3. A toiletry kit in a pocket you can reach without unpacking.
  4. Electronics and the receipt for anything expensive in a layer you can show at security.

Laundry soap for a longer trip saves more space than a packing trick. Souvenirs need a plan on the way home: wear more, or mail a box if the object is worth it.

The bag choice is best carry-on luggage. The fare that assumes this pack is carry-on-only flying.
