Personal item bags

A personal item is the smaller limit. Buy the bag to the airline's published size, and assume a full bag is taller than an empty one.

If this is your only bag, it has to work on the street and under the seat. Photo via Unsplash.

The personal item is the bag that goes under the seat in front of you. On a basic fare it may be the only bag that is free. It is smaller than a carry-on, and the difference is where travelers get charged.

Look up the centimeters for the airline, then the bag's listed size. Marketing photos are of empty bags. A packed bag is taller. If you are between two sizes, buy the one that is clearly under the limit.

What fits, realistically

A change of clothes, a small kit, a charger, a book, and the jacket you might not want to wear. That is a weekend. It is not a week of variety. If you need more, pay for the carry-on on purpose instead of arguing with a sizer.

Straps and handles count. A bag that is legal until you attach a water bottle is a bag that will be over when you attach a water bottle.

Read basic economy tradeoffs and laptop backpacks. If you have outgrown the limit, best carry-on luggage is the next step.
