A practical home office setup
Fix the screen height and the chair before you buy another gadget. A modest external monitor beats a new laptop if the current one is fast enough.

A home office gets better in a boring order. Put the screen where your neck is neutral. Sit in a chair that supports you for the hours you work, and make sure you can return it. Then add light that is not a ceiling glare on the display.
A new computer is the right buy when the current one is slow at the work you do. It is the wrong buy when the real problem is a laptop on a kitchen table at chest height.
Screen position
An external monitor or a stand that lifts the laptop
The top of the screen near eye level changes the day
The chair
A chair you can adjust and return if it hurts
Try it for a week. Looks are the least important spec
Light and cable
A lamp and a way to get cords off the laptop
A dock is worth it when you plug in the same things daily

What to upgrade first
Spend where you notice it
Measure the desk before a monitor arrives. A screen that does not fit is not a productivity tool. If you share the table with dinner, a setup you can clear in two minutes will be used. A permanent installation will be resented.
Keyboards and mice are personal. Buy them from a place that takes them back after a few days of typing. The calendar for bigger electronics is electronics deal calendar. If the work bag is the other half, see laptop backpacks.
