San Francisco hotel deals

Stay where you can walk or roll a bag on a grade you will accept. Union Square is the practical center. The waterfront is the walk. Hills are part of the price.

San Francisco hotel decisions are physical. A cheap room at the top of a steep block is not cheap when you have luggage and the afternoon fog has made the walk cold. Look at the contour, not only the pin.

Union Square remains the straightforward base for a short trip: hotels, BART and Muni nearby, and most first-visit sights a ride or a determined walk away. The Embarcadero is the better walk if the waterfront is the part you care about.

Dates and blocks

Conferences around Moscone Center move downtown rates suddenly. Search your dates. Summer is foggy and busy. September and October are the months locals brag about, and hotels know it.

Read recent guest comments about the street. The city changes block by block, and an average neighborhood score will not warn you about one noisy corner.
