How to read hotel reviews before you book

Read the newest comments about noise, cleanliness, and the specific room type. A high average score does not describe the room you are about to buy.

Hotel scores are averages. Your night will be one room, on one side of the building, during one week. The comments that help are specific: street noise after midnight, a smell, a broken air conditioner, a room smaller than the photo, a front desk that could not find the reservation.

Ignore essays about the city. Ignore a single furious review if the next twenty do not mention the same problem. Believe a pattern.

What to do with reviews

A five-minute read

Sort by newest. Scan for the words noise, mold, dirty, small, and construction. If construction is underway, decide whether your dates fall inside it. Then read two positive reviews that name a detail, so you are not only collecting problems.

Photos from guests are more useful than the hotel's photos when they show the bathroom and the view from the bed. The lobby is rarely the thing that ruins a night.

Use this with how to compare hotel rates, and with a city page such as San Francisco hotel deals where the block changes the stay.
