Best hotel booking sites

Use one site to build a short list and a second site to check the total. The useful difference is how clearly each one shows taxes, fees, and whether you can cancel.

Fare & Find may earn a commission if you book or buy through a link on this page. That does not change the price you pay. Affiliate disclosure.

The setting is the easy part. The rate rules decide whether the stay is a good buy. Photo via Unsplash.

Most city trips can be booked on Booking.com, Hotels.com, or Expedia. They often show the same hotels. They do not always show the same total, the same cancellation deadline, or the same room name.

Pick the site that makes the rules obvious, not the site with the loudest discount badge. A flexible rate you understand is a better product than a cheaper rate you cannot leave.

What to compare before you pay

Look at four things, in this order:

  • The total for your dates, including taxes and fees the site already shows
  • Whether you can cancel without a penalty, and the deadline in your time zone
  • The neighborhood, not only the star rating
  • The room type. Standard can mean a very small room on a noisy street

Write the cancellation deadline down before you click through. A lower nightly rate with a strict rule is a different product from a flexible rate.

If you already know the city, open a city hub such as New York hotel deals or Paris hotel deals and reuse the same three sites. For the fee that shows up after the nightly rate, read resort fees explained.
