When a free-cancellation hotel rate is worth it

Pay for flexibility when the trip might move. Take the prepaid rate when the dates are fixed and the savings are large enough to notice.

Free cancellation is not a moral good. It is insurance against a trip that is not finished yet. Prepaid rates are cheaper because the hotel is buying certainty from you.

The mistake is treating every prepaid discount as worth taking. A small gap is a poor trade if a schedule change would waste the whole stay. A large gap on dates you cannot move is often the right buy.

Which rate to choose

How to read the deadline

The deadline is a date and a time, sometimes in the hotel's time zone rather than yours. If you are booking from far away, convert it before you rely on it. Set a reminder a day earlier than you think you need.

Cancel from the same account you booked with, and keep the confirmation. A rate that is free to cancel is not free if you miss the window.
