Stay where you can walk the center if the trip is short. Trastevere is the evening neighborhood. August is hot, and some restaurants close.

The ancient center is walkable and noisy. A courtyard room is often the better booking. Photo via Unsplash.
Rome is a walking city until your suitcase meets a cobblestone and a hotel with no elevator. Choose the area for the days you planned, then read the access note. A beautiful room on the fourth floor is a different stay with heavy bags.
August is hot, and a slice of the city is on holiday. You can find lower rates and also closed storefronts. Spring and early fall are when the center prices like a festival. Search the dates you have, not a sample week in winter.
Centro Storico
Walking distance to the ruins, fountains, and dinner
Cobblestones and small lifts. Pack a lighter bag
Trastevere
A neighborhood evening across the river
Lively at night. Read noise notes if you sleep early
Vatican and Prati
Quieter streets and an easy morning at the museums
You will cross the river for the Forum. That is fine

Practical booking notes
Tourist-tax lines show up in the total in many European cities. Use the full price. Free cancellation is worth more here if you are still deciding between the center and Trastevere, because they are different trips.
Taxis and the limited traffic zone make a "short hop" less short at peak hours. A walkable hotel removes that problem for most of the historic sites.
