Headphones for travel

Comfort after two hours matters more than a spec sheet. Keep a wired option for the seat, and do not buy a heavy pair you will leave at home.

Travel headphones are a comfort buy. Noise cancelling helps on a jet. It does not help if the headband hurts, the case is a brick, or the battery is dead when you board. Try them on if you can. If you are ordering, use a retailer that takes a simple return after a day of wear.

A wired pair, or a cable for the wireless pair, still belongs in the bag. Seatback screens and dead batteries have not disappeared.

Headphone types for a trip

The short list of checks

  • Weight and whether they fold into a case you will carry
  • A cable or an airplane adapter, not only Bluetooth
  • Ear pads you can clean
  • Battery life longer than the flight, with time to spare

Skip the model with a feature you cannot explain. Spatial audio is not the reason a red-eye feels shorter. A pad that does not hurt is.

This is also a strong gift. See the travel gift guide and the electronics deal calendar for timing.
